| Description nl | OMGEVING EN GEZONDHEID (O&G)Het Centrum voor Omgeving en Gezondheid (O&G) is actief in de volgende nauw met elkaar verbonden onderzoeksgebieden: (a) Arbeids- en Milieublootstelling en Toxicologische Evaluaties; (b) Arbeids- en Milieugeneeskunde; (c) Verzekeringsgeneeskunde; (d) Jeugdgezondheidszorg; (e) Infectie Preventie en Controle; (f) Voeding. De wisselwerking tussen omgeving en gezondheid in verschillende leeftijdsfasen en settings is de belangrijkste gemeenschappelijke onderzoeksfocus van O&G in de genoemde onderzoeksgebieden.Arbeids- en Milieublootstelling en Toxicologische Evaluaties Doelstelling is om de wetenschappelijke kennis (en bij uitbreiding ook de praktijk) in de milieugezondheid en –blootstelling te bevorderen, door het voeren van epidemiologisch, basis- en toegepast onderzoek. De epidemiologische studies bij de mens omvatten ‘klassieke’ blootstellings- en effectstudies van polluenten in de werkomgeving of in het algemene milieu (bv. carcinogenen, irriterende stoffen, metalen, fijn stof, ‘green spaces’) in België en in ontwikkelingslanden (bv. Marokko, Pakistan, DR Congo).De experimentele studies worden uitgevoerd in twee laboratoria: (1) het Laboratorium voor Arbeidshygiëne is een analytisch laboratorium waar methoden worden ontwikkeld en gevalideerd om omgevingsstalen en menselijke stalen na blootstelling te evalueren, en (2) het Laboratorium voor Arbeids- en Milieutoxicologie voert translationeel onderzoek met betrekking tot mechanismen van toxiciteit van ingeademde polluenten, met de nadruk op de ultrafijne partikels en nanodeeltjes, en immunologische en niet-immunologische mechanismen van chemisch-geïnduceerd astma.Arbeids- en Milieugeneeskunde Behalve de hoger genoemde epidemiologische blootstellingsstudies, wordt ook onderzoek verricht naar enerzijds de impact van de omgeving op de gezondheid bij mensen, door hiervan de onderliggende mechanismen te ontrafelen, en anderzijds ook hoe omgekeerd gezondheid de werk(on)bekwaamheid kan beïnvloeden. Voor het eerste ligt de focus hoofdzakelijk op de genetische en epigenetische mechanismen van ontwikkeling van ziekte. Met het oog hierop wordt een translationeel studiedesign toegepast: vaak startend vanuit laboratoriumbevindingen, verkregen via blootstelling van cellen of dieren aan specifieke agentia (bv. partikels, metalen, pesticiden, oplosmiddelen, dentale composieten). Voor het tweede ligt de focus hoofdzakelijk op de sociale omgeving en de psychosociale gezondheid, bv. alcohol- en ander drugsgebruik op het werk, gezond oud worden, determinanten van burn-out.Verzekeringsgeneeskunde Het betreft de toepassing van de medische wetenschap en de geneeskunst op de evaluatie van de levens- en gezondheids- verzekeringsrisico’s. Onderzoek en onderwijs in het domein van de verzekeringsgeneeskunde wordt mede gevoed via nauwe contacten met de ziekenfondsen en de private verzekeraars. Het onderzoek spitst zich toe op de theoretische en toegepaste aspecten van handicap/arbeidsongeschiktheid, levensverzekering, misbruik en gezondheidszorg. Specifieke domeinen van onderzoek zijn handicap/arbeidsongeschiktheid ten gevolge van lage rugpijn, met speciale focus op werkhervatting.Jeugdgezondheidszorg Deze eenheid voert klinisch-epidemiologisch onderzoek naar organisatie van zorg voor kinderen, de evaluatie van preventieve programma’s, naar de evaluatie van groei en ontwikkeling, het management van kinderen met een chronische aandoening op school, en het psychologisch welbevinden van kinderen en jongeren. Bovendien wordt onderzoek gevoerd naar evidence-based jeugdgezondheidszorg, meer bepaald in het domein van preventie en vroegdetectie. Deze eenheid is tevens stichtend lid van het Leuvens Universitair Vaccinologie Centrum (LUVAC), en is via deze weg betrokken bij vaccinonderzoek, waaronder klinische trials en studies van de vaccinatiegraad in de algemene bevolking (met name kinderen en adolescenten) en in specifieke risicogroepen met een chronische aandoening.Infectie Preventie en Controle Deze eenheid is verantwoordelijk voor de infectie preventie en controle van het Universitair Ziekenhuis Leuven. Onderzoek heeft zich voornamelijk toegespitst op de evaluatie van de efficaciteit van desinfectantia in hun verschillende toedieningswijzen, en de beschrijving en analyse van ‘outbreaks’ en preventieve maatregelen. Op dit ogenblik neemt deze eenheid deel aan het Belgisch-Nederlands INTERREG project “i-4-1 Health”, dat zich toespitst op onderzoek van antimicrobiële resistentie en infectie in een gezondheidssetting (veterinair, gemeente en gezondheidszorg). Het project is toegekend voor een periode van 3 jaar, met start op 1/1/2017. Een PhD-student analyseert en optimaliseert de kwaliteit van thuiszorg door zorgverstrekkers. Tot slot is er een onderzoekssamenwerking met het Academisch Centrum voor Huisartsgeneeskunde van de KU Leuven, m.b.t. de infectiecontrole in zorgvoorzieningen met langdurig verblijf.Voeding Het onderzoek in deze eenheid is hoofdzakelijk klinisch-epidemiologisch van aard. De focus ligt vooral op de preventie van chronische aandoeningen d.m.v. leefstijlaanpassingen (voeding, beweging, stress, slaap). Verder is de eenheid betrokken bij thema’s van volksgezondheid, op initiatief van de Hoge Gezondheidsraad (voedingsrichtlijnen, tabellen van voedselsamenstelling, …), en het Vlaams Instituut Gezond Leven (vormingspakketten). |
| Description en | ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH (E&H)The Centre for Environment and Health (E&H) includes the following closely linked areas of research: (a) Occupational and Environmental Exposure and Toxicological Assessment; (b) Occupational and Environmental medicine; (c) Insurance medicine; (d) Youth Health Care; (e) Infection Prevention and Control; (f) Nutrition. The interaction between environment and health in different age groups and settings is the main and common focus of the research of E&H in the different areas of attention.Occupational and Environmental Exposure and Toxicological Assessment The broad research objective of the unit is to improve scientific knowledge (and, hence, practice) in environmental health and exposure, through epidemiologic, basic and applied research. The human epidemiologic studies comprise ‘classic’ exposure and effect studies to pollutants in the workplace or in the general environments (e.g. carcinogens, irritants, metals, particulate air pollution, green spaces) in Belgium and also in developing countries (e.g. Morocco, Pakistan, DR Congo).The experimental studies are conducted in two laboratories: (1) the Laboratory of Occupational Hygiene is an analytical laboratory where methods are developed and validated to assess environmental and human samples after exposure, and (2) the Laboratory of Occupational and Environmental Toxicology performs translational research regarding mechanisms of toxicity of inhaled pollutants with an emphasis on ultrafine particles and engineered nanoparticles, and immunological and non-immunological mechanisms of chemical-induced asthma.Occupational and Environmental Medicine In addition to the above mentioned epidemiologic ‘exposure’ studies, this unit investigates the impact of environment on health in humans by unravelling the underlying mechanism and also the reverse how health can affect work (dis)ability. The first scope focuses mainly on the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms of disease development. Here, we apply a translational study design: often starting from lab findings, obtained through the exposure of cells or animals to specific agents (e.g. particles, metals, pesticides, solvents, dental composite). The main focus of the second scope is the social environment and the psychological health, e.g. alcohol and other drug use at work; healthy ageing, determinants of burn out.Insurance medicine Insurance medicine is the application of the science and art of medicine to the assessment of the life and health insurance risk. The unit makes use of its position close to sickness funds and private insurers to enhance its research, teaching and external profile. Its research relates a range of theoretical and applied issues in disability, life insurance, malpractice and health care. Particular and present areas of research include disability following low back pain with a major focus on return to work. Future research is also aimed at analysing mortality and disability risk in underwriting.Youth Health Care This unit conducts clinical-epidemiological in child health services research, the evaluation of preventive programs, the assessment of child growth and development, the management of chronic disease and psychological well-being of children and adolescents. The unit is also initiator and promoter of evidence-based youth health care in the fields of prevention and early detection. Being one of the founding members of the Leuven University Vaccinology Centre (LUVAC), the unit is actively involved in vaccinology research, including clinical trials and vaccination coverage studies in the general population (i.e. children and adolescents) and in specific risk groups with chronic disease.Infection Prevention and Control The unit is mainly in charge of infection prevention and control for the University Hospitals Leuven. Research was until now focused on the evaluation of the efficacy of disinfectants in their different modes of application and the description and analysis of outbreaks and their preventive measures. At this moment the unit participates in a Belgium-Netherlands INTERREG project i-4-1 Health with focus on antimicrobial resistance and infection control in a one Health setting (veterinary, community and health care). The project focuses on research and innovation and is allocated for a period of 3 years, starting from 1/1/2017. A PhD student is analysing and optimizing the quality of home care by health practitioners. Finally, research collaboration exists with the department of Primary Care, especially in the area of infection control in long-term care facilities.Nutrition The research of this unit is mainly of a clinical-epidemiological nature. The main focus is prevention of chronic diseases by lifestyle adaptations (diet, physical activity, stress, sleep). Further on, the unit is also involved in public health issues coming up from the Superior Health Council (nutritional guidelines, food composition table, workgroup on diet, safety and health, specific questions according to actuality), and the Flemish institute for healthy living (educational tools). |
